Poetic Corner - Engineering Poetry

Updated: Mar 17, 2018

Poems enjoy automatic copyright protection the moment you record them in a tangible form, such as writing them down on paper or typing them into a word processing program and saving the file to your computer’s hard drive. You are not required to formally register your poems with the U.S. Copyright Office, but doing so is important because it will give you legal standing to sue any third parties who infringe upon your work.

United States Perspective. All creative works — poems, stories, music, videos, art, photographs, and so on — are automatically granted copyright protection as soon as they are fixed in a tangible medium. However, registering your creative work with your country’s copyright office gives you a public record of your ownership of the copyrighted work. Design with Ease

Registering your work with the U.S. Copyright Office also allows you to sue infringers in federal court. If made before or within 5 years of publication, registration establishes sufficient evidence in court concerning the validity of the copyright and the facts stated in the copyright certificate.

And now, getting technical, I tend to organise my poetry just like any engineer ought to! To illustrate this point let me display to you how I went about creating a poem where the first and last words of every line rhymed! First I selected the words I wanted to use for maximum emotive expression, this as follows:

Key Words:

Next Came the Inspiration Visual

This could come in many different ways, in my case I epitomised a scenario of polygynyous love, based on me bumping paths with two different ladies, both in supermarkets under the most coincidental of moments. But at the end of the day, after having thought up enough words already, I could not stop but think at the majesty of a lady-bug...

According to the legend, European crops during the Middle Ages were plagued by pests. Farmers began praying to the Blessed Lady, the Virgin Mary. Soon, the farmers started seeing beneficial ladybugs in their fields, and the crops were miraculously saved from the pests. The farmers began calling the red and black beetles lady beetles. In Germany, these insects go by the name Marienkafer, which means Mary beetles. The 7-spotted lady beetle is believed to be the first named for the Virgin Mary; the red color represents her cloak, and the black spots represent her sorrows.

Ahem, so, the meaning of ladybug spirit animal is closely associated first and foremost with good luck, but where does this idea come from? Ladybugs are well known amongst farmers and gardeners for their preference for dining on aphid and scale crop pests. Legends of ladybirds saving an entire crop from pest decimation abound. These stories were passed down through the centuries, resulting in a general association with good luck. Now simply seeing a ladybug is considered good luck for anyone, and the ritual of sending wishes off on a ladybug’s wings is commonplace.
